Khwaja Asif and Tillerson expected to meet in Washington this week: Pakistan’s foreign minister Khwaja Asif in order to meet with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set to leave for United States this week. He will resume bilateral talks and work out ways through which tensions between the two countries could be dispelled which had cropped up after US president Donald Trump’s August 21 speech.

In a first high profile meeting between US and Pakistan since Donald Trump speech, US Vice President Mike Pence had recently met Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and suggested sending a US delegation to Islamabad for talks aimed at removing tensions.

Pakistan while accepting the proposal had asked for a high-level meeting in Washington in order to defuse the tensions. Asif had been invited by US for meeting with Secretary Tillerson on October the 4th.

Asif is also addressing a gathering at the US Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington on US-Pakistan relations on October 5, the institute confirmed, pointing out that Trump’s speech had not only “unsettled US-Pakistan relations” but also had “serious implications for US interests in Afghanistan, nuclear non-proliferation, and stability in the region”.

Trump, in his speech announcing the revised US approach to Afghan war, had accused Pakistan of providing “safe haven” to militants, angering the ruling party and the opposition alike.
