Fajr International Film Festival Is Taking Place For The 36th Time In Tehran: Iranian film directors have been in the headlines for winning Oscars and other respected awards at the international festivals. The film festivals celebrates Iran’s 120 years of national cinema history and today the filmmakers of Iran are praised as being amongst the most artistic filmmakers in the world.

However, Iran film directors are being banned from film-making and leaving the country as well. Two recent examples being directors Jafar Panahi, who is under house arrest in Iran and Mohammad Rasoulof who is restricted from leaving his country.

Among all the controversies and hype 36th Fajr International Film Festival has started in Tehran. The festival is offering a diverse lineup of movies to be screened

  • in Cinema Salvation, the official competition section of the festival;
    • A Phone Call to Father, by Seric Aprymov from Kazakhstan,
    • Little Tito and the Aliens, by Paola Livia Randi from Italy,
    • Little White Lie, by Tomas Alzamora from Chile,
    • Night Accident, by Temirbek Birnazarov from Kyrgyzstan,
    • Beyond the Clouds, by Majid Majidi from India
    • The Silent Revolution, by Lars Kraume from Germany are some of the foreign films scheduled to compete in the official competition section.
  • Eastern Vista, a section dedicated to Asian filmmakers;
  • Cup of Divination, a section dedicated to screening films admired at various international events as well as in several other categories of the festival.

The festival’s director, who took over festival’s direction 3 years ago, Reza Mirkarimi is himself a multi-awarded film director who has a knowledge of how difficult it is to make independent films in Iran.

The festival is hosting representatives from the FIAP (International Federation of Film Producers Association) and FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics).

Other foreign guests are coming from a number of Asian festivals from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and several other countries.

Fajr International Film Festival’s Digital Library now has 500 archived films, chronicling the Iranian cinema over the years.

The 36th edition of Fajr International Film Festival is being functional in Charsou Cineplex and other  venues in Tehran until April 27th 2018. The organizers are receiving over 300 special guests, ranging from filmmakers to screenwriters, actors to critics and scholars. A-listers American director Oliver Stone and Italian actor Franco Nero are also attending the event.

About Fajr International Film Festival

Fajr Film Festival is Iran’s annual film festival, held every February and April in Tehran, Iran. The festival, started in 1982, is under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Iran. It takes place every year on the anniversary of the Iranian revolution.

From 2015 on, the festival has been separated into a national festival in February and an international one in April, with the national one being distinguished for premieres of the most important Iranian domestic movies.
