Google honors the famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib on his 220th birth anniversary

On Wednesday 27th December 2017, Google paid tribute to the famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib by altering the logo on their website. Mirza Ghalib is known to be amongst the most famous and influential Urdu poets of the Indian subcontinent.

Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, whose pen name was Mirza Ghalib, was born in Agra on December 27th of 1797. During the last years of the Mughal Empire Ghalib was a well-known poet of Urdu and Persian languages.

Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan started writing at the age of 11. Althought his first language was Urdu but at his home Persian and Turkish languages were also spoken. He studied Arabic and Persian languages at a young age.

Ghalib is one of the most famous and influential Urdu poets of all times and is still highly appreciated in the present times. Google altered its logo showing Ghalib with his pen and paper, deep in thought, with a background that showcases structures from the Mughal Empire.

Unfortunately his contributions to Urdu poetry were not valued during his life time but his legacy is celebrated by all poetry lovers.

On February 15th, 1869 he died in Delhi. He lived in a house in Gali Qasim Jaan, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. Today his house is known as “Ghalib ki Haveli” and it is now changed into “Ghalib Memorial” and contains a permanent exhibition of Ghalib’s work.
