Antipasto

Antipasto refers to “before the meal” and is thus an appetizer. The purpose served by the said course is to whet the appetite. Common Italian starters include simpler dishes like stuffed olives as well as more complex dishes such as salads and/or bruschetta.

An Italian meal, however, is a little more elaborate and the main course comprises of three “sub-courses” so to say, namely; the primo, secondo and contorno.

Primo (The First Course)

Secondo & Contorno

It is often served without sauce. In the case of special occasions, secondo includes rich dishes such as stews. Contorno refers to cooked seasonal vegetables that are served alongside. After all, greens are important!

Dolce

Any foodie would agree that a meal is incomplete without a desert to wrap it all up! Dolce means sweet and refers to desert that is served at the end of meal. In normal routine, an Italian desert would be simple fruit and biscotti. However, special occasions call for especially scrumptious deserts such as the famed tiramisu and other delectable concoctions like lemon ricotta cookies.
