Blast hits Kabul, Dozens of casualties reported: The official count of casualties has been given at 60 but the figures are expected to rise. According to the early reports the blast had been caused by a car bomb in central Zanbaq Square, properties hundreds of metres away were also damaged by its force.
Images that have been launched on the social media show a large cloud of black smoke over the city and a series of destroyed vehicles.
Eye witnesses describe the scene in Kabul of utter chaos where people with injuries are being transferred to hospital. The central area of the blast has been cordoned off by the police. Early reports suggest the severity of the blast with the share amount of destruction that has been caused.
According to Kabul Police spokesperson Basir Mujahid “It was a car bomb near the German embassy, but there are several other important compounds and offices near there too. It is hard to say what the exact target is.”
No group has so far claimed the attack, however last month the Taliban had announced the start of a major spring offensive, the Talibaan have said that there main focus would be foreign forces, which would be targeted using a mix of conventional, guerrilla, insider and suicide attacks.
The so-called Islamic State in Afghanistan has also been active, saying it was behind a suicide bomb attack this month on a Nato convoy that was passing the US embassy in Kabul. At least eight civilians were killed.
