Critic of Putin detained by police before pre-election rally

Critic of Putin detained by police before pre-election rally: Alexei Navalny the Russian opposition leader had been detained by police as he left his Moscow home on Friday in order to attend a pre-election rally in a provincial town. A presidential election will be held in March in Russia. The incumbent President Vladimir Putin is widely expected to contest. Navalny has hoped to contest the elections despite the election commission baring him to do and describing him ineligible due to a suspended prison sentence which Navalny has said that was politically motivated.
