EU summit in Brussels, looms with talks of Brexit and security
Amid heightened security after Tuesday’s foiled bomb attack, EU leaders are heading to a Brussels summit.
The failed attack was stopped after a Moroccan man had been shot dead after detonating a bomb.
After attacks in London and Paris, Security will be high on the summit agenda. Brexit will also be a focus of attention amongst the EU leaders.
European Council President Donald Tusk has described a new-found optimism, with the “return of the EU rather as a solution, not a problem.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, ahead of his first EU summit said that Europe was “the only place in the world where individual freedoms, the spirit of democracy and social justice are so closely joined“.
Furthermore the UK Prime Minister Theresa May has been expected to offer leaders a quick agreement on residency for EU nationals and employment rights.
However, EU will leave detailed discussions to the Brexit delegations which finally began talks on Monday 19th June 2017.
Cast iron guarantees are wanted for the estimated 3.2 million EU citizens living in the UK, and 1.2 million Britons living in the EU 27 by the EU.
A senior EU diplomatic source said Mrs May would seek to reassure the others on that point.
After the UK election which left Mrs May with a seriously weakened minority government, EU has been left nervous about the Brexit deal.
EU citizens who are living in the UK, and Britons who are living abroad, are worried about their status once Brexit happens. The exit deadline given by the UK is 30th March 2019. Some have even feared deportation if their EU rights are not given.
Insistence of freedom of movement which is currently enjoyed was raised by the European commission which is overseeing the negotiations. The Brussels source said some common ground had been identified on citizens’ rights.
