Types of Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma

This type of cancer is found in the lining of the lungs. Around 75 percent of the diagnosed cases are pleural mesothelioma. This happens due to breathing in asbestos fibers causing it to stick within the lining of the lungs.Symptoms include pain in the chest, buildup of fluid, troubled breathing and continual coughing.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

This type of cancer is developed in the lining of the abdomen. It is caused by inhaling asbestos affecting the abdominal region. 20 percent of mesothelioma cases account for peritoneal mesothelioma, rendering it the second most common type. Symptoms include pain in the stomach, buildup of fluid, loss of weight and trouble in eating.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

Surrounding the heart, pericardial mesothelioma, is the rarest type. It is still unknown what causes this type of cancer; medical researchers are dedicated to deciphering the causes of pericardial mesothelioma. Hence, it is the hardest type of mesothelioma to diagnose. Symptoms include pain in the chest, buildup of fluid and murmurs in the heart.

Mesothelioma is not an incurable disease. However, mesothelioma survival rates depend on several factors inclusive of cancer stage at diagnosis, age, gender, race and genetics of the patient.
