Farc leader Timochenko recovering from stroke in Colombia

Rodrigo Londoño who is the leader of Colombia’s Farc rebel group, is being treated in hospital for a stroke.

Doctors treating Mr Londoño, who is known as Timochenko, have said that he is expected to leave hospital on Tuesday, 4th July 2017, and make a full recovery.

On Sunday, 2nd July 2017, morning he had been admitted to the hospital in the city of Villavicencio.

Doctors treating him in a press conference have said that his health is “in a stable and satisfactory condition.” The Timochenko is thought to be in his late fifties.

Initially the Farc had denied reports that he was ill.

However one of its leaders, Felix Antonio Muñoz Lascarro, who is also known as Pastor Alape, had later spoken to the journalists at the hospital in Villavicencio.

He further added that the Timochenko will not be transferred to another hospital, he said, adding: “This clinic provides the necessary conditions to treat him.

Two years ago while the Timochenko was in Cuba negotiating a peace deal with Columbian officials, he had suffered a heart attack.

In November after four years of negotiations, the left wing rebels had signed a historic peace accord.

The rebels had agreed to hand over their weapons after more than five decades of militancy, and are now allowed to set up a political party.

The Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos had been awarded last year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to put an end to the conflict.

Last month Farc had concluded its disarmament process, Farc had handed over its 7,000 registered weapons to the United Nations mission in Colombia.

Timochenko had became the commander of the left wing rebel group in 2011, when its then leader Alfonso Cano had been killed by the Colombian army.

During an interview to a newspaper, Timochenko had said that he was “not nostalgic” of his days as a guerrilla in the jungle.

He added that “I honestly feel a great relief for having concluded this stage and preparing for the next phase, For me, as revolutionary, the weapons were simply a tool that were with us for many years. But at the Farc we are not in love with guns. We love our cause and our ideals. And if we can carry on with our ideals without the guns, so much the better
