Trump is deeply unpopular in France due to biting trade sanctions on European steel and aluminum that will enter into force on May 1st unless Trump agrees to sign a waiver. If US President Trump refuse to sign, there are fears of a full-fledged trade war.

“If you make war against everybody,” Macron said, “trade war against Europe, war in Syria, war against Iran – come on – it doesn’t work. You need allies. We are the allies.”

Trade featured prominently on Macron’s agenda. The French president has openly criticized Trump’s protectionist moves in recent weeks and wants Washington to exempt European nations from U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs aimed mainly at China.

“I think the US role is very important to play,” he said. Macron warned Trump not to levy tariffs on European steel and aluminum. “You cannot make a trade war with your ally.

Macron came with a strong front to Trump’s demands that European markets be more open to American products. While the United States runs a $16 billion agricultural trade surplus with the rest of the world, it carries a $12 billion trade deficit in farm and food products with the European Union.

Trump is aiming to emerge with a unified front between the two big trading partners “France and America” against China.

In public, both countries keenly emphasize on their historic relationship as they recalled that France was the first ally of American revolutionaries fighting for independence. Macron brought an oak sapling with him that he and Trump planted at the White House as a symbol of friendship.
