‘Friendly fire’ airstrike kills Philippines soldiers in Marawi: According to defence secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Wednesday, 31st, May, 2017, eight soldiers were also wounded in the “friendly fire” the defence secretary expressed remorse on the loss of soldiers.
The last week militants allied to the Islamic State (IS) battle with government forces, the battle in street with the army has left more than 100 people dead.
The battle had been sparked by the attempted capture of a top militant leader by the army.
Mr Lorenzana told reporters “Yesterday we had a tragedy that involved our troops. A group of our military, army men, were hit by our own airstrike. We lost men, 10 killed and 8 wounded”
Last week President Rodrigo Duterte had declared martial law on the southern island of Mindanao, where Marawi City is located.
Earlier Security forces had launched a raid to arrest the Filipino militant Isnilon Hapilon who is on the list of US most wanted terror suspects.
Authorities have said that dozens of fighters had fought back to protect him, and then had attacked parts of the city which has a population of 200,000, taking hostages.
Armed forces and helicopter airstrikes have been used by the Philippines military to try and drive the militants out.
Most of the civilians have evacuated Marawi, while about 2,000 remain trapped.
Defence Minister Lorenzana has told reporters that on Thursday, 01st, June, 2017, among the militants that have been killed there had been fighters from at least five other nationalities which included Saudi, Yemeni and Chechen fighters.
