International Day of Cooperatives Observed: International Day of Cooperatives was observed on Saturday to express solidarity with the people associated with cooperatives movement.

International Co-operative Day is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Co-operative Alliance. Theme of 2018 International Day of Cooperatives is sustainable consumption and production.

In his message on the day, Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari has said that best results can be achieved by benefitting from the fruits of cooperatives movement.

He added that economic conditions of the people can be improved by further activating the cooperative organizations.

He said that role of cooperative organizations is very important for providing best facilities to the people for living a better life.

Cooperators everywhere celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives. The United Nations established the holiday to recognize co-ops’ contributions to society, culture and the economy. This year’s theme is “Sustainable Consumption and Production.” The World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainable development as “meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Cooperatives are businesses owned by the people they benefit. They exist in every major industry and are common in food and agriculture. Co-ops provide members with sustainable solutions. They help farmers gain access to larger markets, boost product quality, reduce costs and achieve greater efficiency and operational effectiveness.
