Lopez Obrador Won Mexico Presidential Elections: Anti-establishment leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador won Mexico’s presidential election by a large margin, in a landmark break with the parties that have governed for nearly a century.
According to exit polls, three polling firms gave the former Mexico City mayor the win.
Newspaper el Financiero’s exit poll gave him 49 percent of the vote to 27 percent for conservative Ricardo Anaya and 18 percent for ruling-party candidate Jose Antonio Meade.
Polling firms Mitofsky and the strategic communications cabinet announced broadly similar results in their own exit polls.
All had Lopez Obrador winning more than 40 percent of the vote in the single-round race, well ahead of his rivals. This is Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the man set to be Mexico’s next president.
Obrador! Obrador! His mission? To transform Mexico and rid it of ingrained corruption, violence, and poverty.
Amlo wanted to win the polls
After decades of campaigning and two failed bids for the presidency, the 64-year-old, known as Amlo, is on course for a landslide win.
But who is Amlo? He grew up in this house in the southeastern village of Tepetitán, a world away from the privilege of Mexico’s traditional ruling class. His supporters believe the leftist leader has his feet on the ground and can deliver.
Amlo’s detractors worry he wants to turn back the clock with leftist policies that plunged Mexico into crisis in the 1970s. His only experience in office was as mayor of Mexico City from 2000 to 2005. And even those closest to him have had their doubts.
Second, what happened with security when he was the mayor? . Third, he’s a man that really believes in rule of law. And therefore, what is the connection with [INAUDIBLE]?
Romo believes Amlo has matured politically, and it’s pragmatism, not romanticism, that will get him elected.
Today, why we have more than 50% of according to the polls? Why? Because we moved to the centre. Because a plan has been developed by all the people.
His mandate was, please make a consensus.
But voters are furious with the ruling Institutional Revolutionary party or PRI, which has dominated politics for nearly a century.
And what of Mexico’s fraught relationship with the US?
Mexicans went to the polls on July the 1st. Amlo has broadened his support nationwide, but it’s still among the poor where his message resonates the most.
