According to the authorities the man had not been carrying any explosive device and the incident was not terror related.  The court was told that the man felt “vulnerable” in custody and had needed medical help.

Mr Marks, who had been living in Australia on a student visa, has been accused of endangering the safety of an aircraft and making threats or false statements.

According to the Victoria Police the device that the man was carrying was a “speaker-type” object and not an explosive.

Witnesses have described how the man was tackled after he made threats to the plane.

Conversely, the authorities have been under pressure to explain the time it had taken for the armed police to board the plane and arrest Mr Marks after the plane had landed at Melbourne airport.

Local media has reported that the 337 passengers and crew were forced to wait for up to 90 minutes.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton had said that the police had initially treated the situation as a possible terrorism incident, before deciding it was “a case involving a mental health issue.

I certainly appreciate when you are on a plane in that situation one minute could seem like an hour” he said.”The objective in any serious incident like this is to get every member of the crew, every passenger off the plane safely, and that is what was able to be achieved.

Police has said that Mr Marks had been released from a psychiatric facility on the day of the incident.
