Missile defence system tested by the US amid North Korea concerns: According to US officials, US has for the first time successfully tested its defence system against an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
According to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) in the test a ground based interceptor had been launched at a California air base and was shot down by a mock ballistic missile.
According to the Pentagon the test was long-planned however it comes amid increased tensions with North Korea. The test has comes after Pyongyang fired its ninth missile this year.
On Tuesday, 30th, May, 2017, MDA Director Vice Adm Jim Syring the test is a “critical milestone, This system is vitally important to the defence of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat.”
It was the first live-fire test against a simulated ICBM for the Ground-Based Missile Defense (GMD).
The interceptor, which had been launched from the Vandenberg Air Force, was intercepted with a simulated missile launched from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands over the Pacific Ocean.
The announcement comes in the wake of North Korea’s third missile test in three weeks.
A UN resolution which banned all nuclear and missile activity has been repeatedly defied by Pyongyang, and has ramped up the pace of its tests in recent months.
