North Korea urged by South Korea’s Moon to return detainees
On Tuesday, 20th June 2017, Moon Jae-in the South Korean President said that North Korea should swiftly return South Koreans and Americans who have been detained in the reclusive nation.
On Monday, 19th June 2017, an American university student Otto Warmbier, who was a prisoner held in North Korea for 17 months had died at a Cincinnati hospital. According to Mr Warmbier’s parents, he had died just days after North Korea released him from captivity in a coma.
North Korea still has three other U.S. citizens, who are ethnic Koreans, and six South Koreans in custody in North Korea.
US doctors who were tackling the case of Warmbier, 22, have described his condition as having extensive brain damage that left him in a state of “unresponsive wakefulness.”
On the other hand the U.S. President Donald Trump had blamed the “brutality of the North Korean regime” for Warmbier’s death.
On Tuesday, 20th June 2017, South Korea’s Blue House had cited Moon as saying “it is very deplorable that North Korea does not respect human rights.”
A Presidential spokesman for South Korea while talking to a briefing said that the South Korean government will make every effort for the return of those held in North Korea.
