Paris police says Champs-Elysees attack car ‘had guns and gas’
Police officials say that a car had deliberately hit a police van and had burst into flames afterwards, the incident had happened on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in central Paris.
Police had found a Ak-47 riffle, handguns and gas bottles in the car, while the driver, who had been on a security watchlist had died in the incident.
Interior Minister Gerard Collom had said “Security forces have been targeted in France once again” the minister had called it an “attempted attack.”
No-one else was hurt in the incident.
After being hit by a series of attacks on its soil in recent years, France is under a state of emergency.
Just days before the first round of the presidential elections, a policeman had been shot dead and two others had been wounded in an attack on the Champs-Élysées in April.
The Monday’s terror incident had occurred a day after the end of France’s parliamentary elections, in which the party of President Emmanuel Macron had won with a majority.
Reports say that a white car could be seen standing in the middle of the empty avenue with one door open and sniffer dogs were sent in.
Our correspondent says there are always many police and gendarme vehicles near the spot, as it is next to the local police station.
Afterwards bomb disposal experts had been sent to the scene in order to inspect the vehicle, a Renault Mégane.
Mr Collomb, who visited the site, said weapons and explosives found inside “could potentially blow this car up.”
According to the Reports, officers had to smash the car windows to pull the driver out.
Sources who are close to the investigation have said that the driver of the car had been on a security watchlist since 2015 for membership of a “radical Islamist movement.”
It is reported that the Police were searching the man’s home in the Essonne area south of Paris.
Earlier police had warned the people to respect a security cordon around the area.
The anti-terrorist section of the prosecutor’s office has opened up an investigation into the incident, which happened close to the Élysée Palace, the president’s official residence, and the US embassy.
