President’s ‘possible obstruction of justice to be probed’ in Russian inquiry

President’s ‘possible obstruction of justice to be probed’ in Russian inquiry: According to reports Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating US President Donald Trump for possible obstruction of justice.

The reports which has cited unnamed officials has claimed that Mr Mueller is going to investigate three senior intelligence officials.

The lawyer for President Trump has said the leak to the newspaper was “outrageous.” Mr Mueller is overseeing an FBI inquiry into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 US election and any Trump links to it. On the other hand President Trump has denied any collusion with Russia. The President has described the investigation as a “witch hunt.”

A newspaper has described the switch of the investigation by Mr Mueller towards President Trump’s own conduct as a major turning point in the investigation. The report claims that until recently the investigation had focused on the Russian angle.

While Quoting officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the newspaper said that Daniel Coats, the director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency, and Richard Ledgett, until recently Mr Rogers’ deputy, all had agreed to be interviewed by investigators. According to the newspaper this could happen as early as the next week.

Unnamed officials have told the newspaper that the investigation of alleged obstruction of justice by President Trump had started days after the President fired FBI director James Comey on 9th May 2017.

However, President Trump before firing Mr Comey had sought and received assurances that the President was not under investigation personally. However Mr Comey has suggested that President Trump had attempted to get him to shut down an investigation into his former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Earlier Mr Flynn had been fired in February for failing to reveal the extent of his contact with Sergei Kislak the Russian ambassador to Washington. On the other hand the White House had denied it put pressure on Mr Comey.

James Comey had just hinted at it, people inside Washington had suspected it and now a newspaper has reported at it. President Donald Trump, through a special counsel’s office is under direct investigation for obstruction of justice.

President Trump will surely claim that the Russian investigation is a hoax which has been perpetrated by Democrats and a hostile media. He will also say that the allegations of obstruction are built on an empty foundation.

The question still remains as to what exactly can happen if Mr Mueller finds out that the president had violated the law and acted to disrupt an ongoing investigation.

President Trump has so far made no comments on the latest report.

But a spokesman for Mr Trump’s lawyer Marc Kasowitz responded angrily to the Washington Post story.

“The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal,” said spokesman Mark Corallo.
