Riyadh Hosts First Ever Fashion Fiesta In Saudi Arabia, “Fashion Was Always Our Interest “, Says Princess Noura: The kingdom’s first ever Arab Fashion Week opened this week with full excitement and controversy at the Ritz-Carlton Riyadh. Famous designers from Europe, US, Russia, Brazil and Arab World (Ukraine to Lebanon) joined the event to exhibit their clothing line brands. Princess Noura who is also president of Arab Fashion Council in Riyadh on the occasion shared that “Our fashion council is trying to bring the fashion industry in Saudi Arabia to a whole new level, a whole new industry.”
CEO of the Arab Fashion Council, Jacob Abrian said that “We are so excited today to be announcing a history and new era for the kingdom, and for the entire Arab world, which is Arab Fashion Week”. A second edition of Saudi Arab Fashion Week is already scheduled for October.
Arab Fashion week was previously hosted by Gulf fashion capital Dubai but this year for the first time Saudi Arab hosted it with exclusive collections from the designers. In Riyadh, Arab Fashion Week was not open to cameras and only women were allowed to attend it.
Saudi Arab has witnessed policy shift (women friendly policies) since the appointment of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
- First Women Marathon was held in March this year
- Women will be driving from this June.
- Abaya may not be a compulsory thing to wear for women in future.
It was a delight to see Saudi Arab first fashion week marked with fashionable women, dark-haired Saudis and blonde Eastern Europeans alike, fill the gold-trimmed halls of Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Among the designers “The Suitable Woman line” by Arwa Banawi, was adored by fashion fans across the region.
By bringing fashion designers from Europe and placing international brands on the same catwalk as Arab brands, Arab Fashion Council (AFC) hopes to promote Saudi Arab fashion designers. AFC wants to introduce fashion courses, internships, and scholarships to Saudi Arabia and develop a fashion district in Riyadh.
