Russian jet flew 5ft from US spy plane’ over Baltic Sea
US officials have termed the encounter as “unsafe” due to the Russian pilot’s “high rate of closure speed and poor control of the aircraft.”
However Russia has disputed the American account, Russia said that the US plane had made a “provocative” move towards their jet.
On Monday, 19th June 2017, Russia had warned US that jets flying in Syria will be treated as targets.
The announcement had come in after the US had downed a Syrian jet after it had targeted American allied rebels.
On Tuesday, 20th June 2017 the US military had shot down an armed Iranian made drone in Syria, which had added to tensions between the Washington and Moscow, which is allied with the Syrian regime.
The intercept on Monday the 19th had occurred 25 miles (40 km) from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, over international waters.
Captain Jeff Davis the Pentagon spokesman had told reporters: “We were flying in international airspace and did nothing to provoke this behaviour.”
He added that the US RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft had been flying with its transponder on, which made it visible to other aircraft.
However Russia’s defence ministry had said that it was the US plane which had behaved dangerously after it had already been intercepted and was being escorted by a Russian Su-27 fighter jet.
The TASS news agency had quoted the Russian ministry as saying “During the escorting, the RC-135 crew made an attempt of closing with the Russian fighter, performing a provocative turnaround toward the Su-27.”
The ministry said that another US surveillance had arrived about 10 minutes later, and it too had been intercepted by a SU-27 jet.
Earlier in the month, the US Air Force had deployed 800 troops and long range B-52 bombers to the United Kingdom to take part in joint Nato exercises.
US officials have said that since the beginnings of June there have been more than 30 interactions between US and Russian planes and ships in the Baltic Sea.
US officials have said that the majority have been deemed safe.
