Sanctions on North Korea trade allies considered by the US

Sanctions on North Korea trade allies considered by the US: US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has warned that the US is considering sanctions on countries that are conducting illegal business with North Korea.

Mr Tillerson said that the White House will very soon have to decide whether to impose “secondary sanctions” on those nations.

With North Korea increasing efforts in its nuclear and missile activities, the Trump administration has sought to increase pressure on North Korea to curb its activities. Furthermore Pyongyang’s recent missile tests which were banned by the UN, have sparked international alarm.

It is believed that North Korea is making progress towards developing a ballistic missile which is capable of reaching the US. The warning by Mr Tillerson’s came at a hearing at the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday 13th June 2017.

Mr Tillerson in a statement said: “We are in a stage where we are moving into this next effort of ‘Are we going to have to, in effect, start taking secondary sanctions because countries we have provided information to have not, or are unwilling, or don’t have the ability to do that?‘”

The US has no trade links with North Korea, and it has been considering sanctioning companies from third countries who deal with the secretive regime of Kim Jong-un in violation of UN resolutions.

However, Mr Tillerson had not named any countries.

Mr Tillerson added that the North Korea issue would be discussed with the Chinese government at a high-level talks next week, China is Pyongyang’s major ally.

Mr Tillerson in reply to a question that whether or not China had been fulfilling the pledges it had made to put more pressure on North Korea, said: “They have taken steps, visible steps that we can confirm.

At the committee hearing, Mr Tillerson also stated that:

The US policy of greater economic openness was providing financial support to a “very oppressive regime” in Cuba. President Trump is expected to announce tighter rules on trade and travel as early as Friday

US relations with Russia were at an “all-time low” over the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, and also over alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections
