Snap gay marriage vote to be voted by German MPs
Days after Angela Merkel had dropped her opposition to the idea, German MPs are expected to vote to legalise same-sex marriage.
After the reform gay men and lesbians will have full marital rights, which will allow them to adopt children.
Presently the German same-sex couples have been limited to civil unions.
Mrs Merkel on Monday, 26th June 2017, said that she would allow MP’s from her CDU party to “follow their conscience”.
Angela Merkel during her 2013 election campaign had argued against gay marriage on the grounds of “children’s welfare” furthermore she had admitted that she had a “hard time” with the issue.
However on 26th June, at an event which was hosted by the women’s magazine “Brigitte” she had shocked the German media by announcing on stage that she had noted other parties’ support for it, and would allow a free vote in the future.
The chancellor who is usually very cautious said that she had had a “life-changing experience” in her home constituency, where the chancellor said she had dinner with a lesbian couple who cared for eight foster children together.
