Staggering loss of life in Raqqa battle from US-led air strikes: The UN war crimes investigators have said that the US-led coalition air strikes on Islamic State militants in the Syrian city of Raqqa have caused a “staggering loss of life.”
The coalition warplanes have been supporting an offensive on the IS stronghold which had been launched last week by an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters.
Afterwards the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had taken territory to the west, east and north of the city.
160,000 people have fled their homes as a result of the ongoing battle.
According to the coalition the capture of Raqqa will deliver a decisive blow to the caliphate which had been proclaimed by IS in June 2014 after it had taken the control of the city. About 3,000 to 4,000 militants are believed to be holed up inside Raqqa.
There is no clarity as to the amount of civilians present in the city, but the international observers have placed the estimates at 200,000.
