Ties between Panama and Taiwan cut by Panama in favour of China: Panama has cut ties with Taiwan in favour of building ties with China. In a statement the government of Panama has said that it recognised “only one China” it further added that it considers Taiwan part of it.
On the other hand Taiwan has expressed “anger and regret” while accusing Panama of “bullying.”
Conversely a handful of countries have maintained ties with Taipei instead of Beijing and China regards Taiwan as a breakaway province. Panama is the latest country to switch sides.
Currently only 20 countries have diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
In the recent years China had intensified economic investment into the Central American country which is home of the economically vital Panama Canal.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry had “expressed anger and regret” over what it has called a “very unfriendly” diplomatic turn by Panama that “yielded to economic interests by the Beijing authorities.”
Furthermore Taiwan has accused Panama of “bullying” while “ignoring the many years of friendship” that existed between the two countries, and added it “will not compete with the Beijing authorities for money diplomacy.”
Earlier in June last year Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen had visited Panama, on her very first overseas trip as president.
After the announcement made by Panama, China’s state media had published photos of the two countries’ foreign ministers in Beijing signing a document establishing diplomatic relations, and toasting with champagne.
Furthermore China’s foreign ministry had issued a statement (in Chinese) saying that “the Chinese government and its people highly appreciate and warmly welcome” the move by Panama.
