Alexei Navalny Russian Opposition leader sentenced amid Russia protests: Alexei Navalny Russia’s opposition leader has been sentenced to 30 days administrative arrest for violating the law on staging rallies.
On Monday, 12th June 2017, Mr Navalny was detained at his home in Moscow; he was arrested ahead of anti-corruption demonstrations in Russia. Along with him hundreds of people were also held during the gatherings across the country.
According to reports riot police in central Moscow has been picking protesters out of the crowd at random.
Late on Monday a court room in Moscow announced its verdict, the court room had rejected demands by Alexei Navalny’s defence lawyers to drop the case.
The opposition leader Mr Navalny had confirmed the news on twitter.
Mr Navalny, had intended to stand for the Russian presidency next year, he was scheduled to participate in an unauthorised rally in Moscow at Monday.
According to an independent NGO 850 people have been detained thus far in the protests.
According to the Russian authorities approximately 5000 people took part in the protests.
The NGO further said that people were held in St. Petersburg.
However according to the Russia’s interior ministry about 3,500 people attended the protest in the north-western city, and 500 were detained.
