Top UN official in Myanmar to be changed: The United Nations confirms that its top official in Myanmar will be moved from her position.
According to the sources, the decision has been linked to Renata Lok-Dessallien’s failure to prioritise human rights. The particular highlight in this regard was to the oppressed Rohingya Muslim minority.
In the reports in which the original UN documents which were viewed showed that the organisation was “glaringly dysfunctional“, and wracked by internal tensions.
According to a UN spokeswoman who confirmed Ms Lok-Dessallien, a Canadian citizen, was being “rotated“, the spokeswoman added that it was not due to her performance which had been “consistently appreciated.”
Late in last year, thousands of Rohingya people had fled the rape and abuse at the hands of Burmese soldiers, while the UN team inside Mayanmar had largely been silent.
Ms Lok-Dessallien along with her spokesman had declined simple requests for information. Furthermore on one absurd occasion she had visited the conflict area, but on her return refused to allow journalists to film or record her words at a press conference.
Adding to that aid workers and volunteers were excluded from important meetings of the committee.
Ms Lok Dessallien and her team has been criticised for what is being said as her attempt to build strong relationships with the Burmese government and building development programmes and not advocating the rights of oppressed minorities like the Rohingya.
Ms Lok-Dessallien is currently on leave but has been told that her position is being upgraded, bringing her role to an end after three-and-a-half years, rather than the usual term of up to five years.
