Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’ comes into effect
All refugees along with people belonging to six mainly Muslim countries face tougher US entry due to a controversial travel ban enforced by President Donald Trump.
According to the travel ban people without close family or business relationships in the US could be denied visas and barred entry. Among the relationships, Grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces are not considered to be “bona fide” relations.
These rules will apply to people belonging to Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, along with all refugees.
It had emerged just moments before the ban began at 20:00 Washington time (00:00 GMT), that the state of Hawaii had asked a federal judge for clarification.
The state of Hawaii previously had accused the US government of violating the Supreme Court’s instructions by improperly excluding people.
According to an official with the Department of Homeland Security it expected “business as usual at ports of entry“, the official further added: “Our people are well prepared for this.”
According to the Immigration rights activists and lawyers they would be at hand at all the major US airports ready to help arrivals and ensure those with valid visas were allowed in.
Earlier in the week, the Supreme Court had partially upheld the ban, when it lifted injunctions which had halted one of the president’s key policies.
According to the court ruling people who seeked visas to travel to the US from the six restricted countries, and all refugees, will have to prove a “bona fide relationship” to someone in the country.
The final decision on the ban from the Supreme Court is expected in October.
The new rules state, that for the next 90 days tshose from the six countries without a close relationship will not be able to enter the US.
People who can come in must have a related parent, spouse, fiancé, child, son- or daughter-in-law, or sibling, including step- or half-siblings.
While relations such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family and grandchildren are not considered bona fide relationships.
Business or educational ties to the US are exempt from the new rules. Furthermore, the guidelines have specified that the relationship must be a formal one, it must be documented and not formed for the purpose of evading the order.
People who already hold valid visas are not affected. Also dual nationals who travel on their passport from the unaffected country will also be allowed entry.
A 120 day ban on refugees seeking to enter the US was also implemented by the court. The rule will allow the government to bar entry to refugee claimants who cannot prove the same ties to an American individual or entity.
