Twitter account of Al Jazeera back after suspension
After being suspended for what is being called an “organised campaign” the Arabic-language account of Al Jazeera has been restored on Twitter
The account had been suspended for unspecified reasons on Saturday, 17th June 2017. The Al Jazeera Arabic has nearly 12 million followers.
Al Jazeera is the main flagship broadcaster for Qatar, Qatar is under pressure from fellow Gulf countries who accuse it of supporting terrorism. The account had been restored by early afternoon Qatar time.
According to the rules by Twitter an account can be suspended for three main reasons: because it is posting spam, because it has been hacked or compromised, or because it “engages in abusive behaviour, like sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts.”
However it is unusual for a national broadcaster with that much follower to get its account suspended.
A senior editor for the website has wrote that there had been an “on going storm of mass reporting” of the account – of Twitter receiving significant numbers of complaints at the same time.
While different accounts of Al Jazeera which operate in different languages have stayed online, the account which dealt with the breaking news in Arabic also stayed online.
