UK may join US in fight against Syria’s Assad: Boris Johnson: HumSub.TV: In spite of a prior vote to not intervene, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson says the UK may decide to aid the US in its air strikes against Syria, especially aimed at “monster” Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
“We know beyond doubt that two Sukhoi-22 aircraft took off from Shayrat airfield where we know that chemical weapons are stored,” Johnson stated Tuesday, according to The Independent.
Johnson added that Britain was aware beforehand of the US President Donald Trump’s order to attack the Syrian airbase, but chose not to be a part of it, saying, “I think it would be very difficult for the United Kingdom to say no” if it was asked to join forces with the US.
“The Assad regime almost certainly gassed its own people in breach of international law and the rules of war,” Johnson explained, referring to how it defied the deal to end its stock of chemical weapons back in 2013.
While Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May had commended the strikes on Syria, the Conservative Party is said to be split over involvement in future operations against Syria. Former PM David Cameron, on the other hand, had also voiced support for military action.
The Foreign Secretary also talked about North Korea, stating that no one can be complacent about the potential threat posed by the missiles being developed by North Korea, Reuters reported. He said that both the Syrian and North Korean regimes have threatened “the law-based international order”.
“The regime is now developing intercontinental ballistic missiles, which would be capable of delivering a nuclear strike on the mainland United States. These weapons have not yet been fully tested but no one can be complacent about the potential threat they pose,” Johnson told parliament.
In an interview with the BBC on Monday, North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Han Song-Ryol said Pyongyang would continue to test missiles on a “weekly, monthly and yearly basis”.
Tensions between North Korea and the US are almost on a breaking point, with the former claiming to “annihilate” the US forces if they conduct a pre-emptive strike as the Trump-backed “armada” of nuclear-powered warships creeps up toward the Korean peninsula.
Johnson also said he had spoken to his Chinese counterpart on Monday and urged him to use Beijing’s influence to restrain North Korea, putting China in an awkward position as nations around the world pressurise it to control the isolated country.
