US AG Jeff Sessions has denied holding secret meeting with Russia envoy

US AG Jeff Sessions has denied holding secret meeting with Russia envoy: During a congress hearing US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has denied having undisclosed meetings with Russian officials at a Washington DC hotel.

The top law official of the US told the Senate Intelligence Committee that any suggestion that he colluded with the Kremlin was “an appalling and detestable lie.

Furthermore AG Session refused to give details about his private conversation with President Trump. Mr Session had vowed to defend his honour “against scurrilous and false allegations.

These remarks have come after the sacked FBI boss James Comey had said that he believed he had been fired to influence the agency’s investigation into Russian political meddling.

Conversely the US intelligence agencies believe that Russia had interfered in the election and helped Republican President Donald Trump to get elected.

The Senate committee is one of the several congressional panels that, alongside a special counsel, is also investigating whether any Trump campaign officials colluded with the alleged Kremlin plot.

Country’s top law official Mr Sessions, told the Senate committee that he has never received a classified briefing about Russian meddling in last year’s election. Mr Session also denied speaking to Russian officials about the election, in a campaign in which he was a close adviser to candidate Trump.

In a statement on Tuesday, 13th June 2017, he said “I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in the United States

Mr Session is so far the most senior member of the Trump administration to testify before the Senate committee.

Mr Sessions acknowledged that he met Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak twice; however he suggested that he could not remember whether he met the envoy at a foreign policy speech event for then-candidate Mr Trump at the Mayflower Hotel on 27 April 2016 as per the reports of US media.

Furthermore the former senator of Alabama also denied the media reports that he offered his resignation when Mr Trump was reportedly angered by his recusal from the FBI Russia probe, telling the panel he “will not be deterred.

During the statement Mr Sessions was often evasive and his accounting of details uncertain, his statement was littered with “I don’t recalls” and “I have no recollections.

Mr Sessions is not the first politician to seek refuge in fuzzy memory under sharp questioning. Definitive statements which are proven inaccurate under oath are more prone to accusations of perjury.

When it came time to discuss his conversations with the president, Mr Sessions demurred, noting that he wanted to give Mr Trump the opportunity to review the question before sharing his thoughts.

It seemed that the the attorney general had been trying to pre-emptively invoke executive privilege which is the right of a president to candid counsel from his advisers, without using those magic words.

It seemed that Mr Session’s memory only served when he forcefully condemned allegations of Russian collusion as “appalling and detestable.

The discussion currently at this moment is more than that of collusion. The discussion is about obstruction of justice along with the circumstances surrounding the firing of an FBI director.
