US confirms long range missile test by North Korea

It has been confirmed by the US that North Korea has conducted a long range missile test, some experts believe the tested missile could reach Alaska.

The test has been called a “new escalation of the threat” to the World and the US said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, he further added that Washington “will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea.”

It was claimed by Pyongyang on Tuesday, 4th July 2017, that they have successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

In response to the test, the US along with South Korea had conducted a joint military exercise.

Through a statement which was given by the two countries’ militaries they warned that “self-restraint, which is a choice, is all that separates armistice and war” and the drills have shown “we are able to change our choice.

The 1950-53 war between the two Korean states had ended in an armistice and the two Koreas are technically still at war.

Mr Tillerson in a statement said that “global action is required to stop a global threat” he further warned that any nation which provided economic or military benefits to the North, or failed to fully implement the UN Security Council resolution, was “aiding and abetting a dangerous regime.

On Wednesday, 5th July 2017, an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council has been called by the US, the meeting has been called to discuss the issue. A closed-door session of the 15-member body is expected later on Wednesday.

Although the test of Tuesday appeared to be a significant development, experts however believe that North Korea still does not have long-range nuclear weapon capabilities.

A long-range missile usually designed to carry a nuclear warhead

The minimum range is 5,500km (3,400 miles), although most fly about 10,000km or more

Pyongyang has previously displayed two types of ICBMs: the KN-08, with a range of 11,500km, and the KN-14, with a range of 10,000km, but before 4 July had not claimed to have flight tested an ICBM. It is not clear what differentiates the Hwasong-14

According to the KCNA which is the State news agency it quoted leader Kim Jong-un as saying that the test was a “gift” to the Americans on their independence day.

In the report a warning of the possibility of more tests was given, in the report it was said that Kim Jong-Un has ordered the officials to “frequently send big and small ‘gift packages’ to the Yankees.

Earlier, Pyongyang had said that the Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) had reached an altitude of 2,802km (1,731 miles) and had flown 933km for 39 minutes before hitting a target in the sea.

North Korea had said, that it was now “a full-fledged nuclear power that has been possessed of the most powerful inter-continental ballistic rocket capable of hitting any part of the world.

The launch, which is the latest in a series of tests, was in defiance of a ban by the UN Security Council.
