US media reports that Trumps Son in Law discussed setting up secret line with Moscow: In a meeting held on December 2016, it is believed that Jared Kushner had discussed the possibility of creating a channel. There has been no comment by the senior White House aide so far.
FBI is investigating Mr Kushner as part of its wider investigation into Russian links. According to reports investigators believe that Mr Kushner has relevant information, however he is not necessarily suspected of a crime.
The most recent reports suggest that Mr Kushner had spoken with Moscow’s ambassador, Sergei Kisylak, the discussion seems to have been about setting up a backchannel using Russian diplomatic facilities in America. This backchannel could have been used to discuss Syria and other policy issues.
The reports further suggest that Mr Trump’s first national security advisor Michael Flynn had also been present at the meeting, the mentioned meeting was held at Trump Tower in New York. According to the reports the said the line was never established. General Flynn had been forced to give up his job in February, 2017, after news of his misleading administration officials about the extent of his contacts with Mr Kislyak emerged.
US media has already reported that FBI investigators were focusing on meetings Mr Kushner had held last year with Mr Kislyak. In those meetings a banker from Moscow, Sergei Gorkov, was also present. Mr Kushner’s lawyer has previously said his client would co-operate with any inquiry.
According to US intelligence agencies, Moscow had tried to tip November’s presidential election in favour of Republican Mr Trump, who went on to beat Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Conversely President Trump has described the Russia investigations as “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.”
