A report has said that Saudi Arabia has clear link to UK extremism
Saudi Arabia has been declared the chief foreign promoter of Islamist extremism in the UK.
According to a report by the Henry Jackson Society which said that there was a “clear and growing link” between Islamist organisations which were receiving overseas funds, hate preachers and Jihadist groups promoting violence.
The foreign affairs based think tank had called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.
According to the Saudi embassy in the UK the claims are “categorically false.”
UK Ministers have been under pressure to publish a report on UK-based Islamist groups.
The report into the existence and influence of Jihadist organizations by Home Office, which was commissioned by former Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015, has reportedly yet to be completed amid questions such as whether it will ever be published still remain.
According to the critics it has been suggested that it could make uncomfortable situation for the government, which has a close and longstanding diplomatic, security and economic links with the Gulf, particularly Saudi Arabia.
The report which was published on Wednesday says that a number of Gulf nations, including Iran, have been providing financial support to mosques and Islamic educational institutions which have played host to extremist preachers and been linked to the spread of extremist material.
According to the report at the top of the list, lies Saudi Arabia. According to the report it alleged that individuals and foundations have been heavily involved in exporting what it calls “an illiberal, bigoted ideology” quoting a number of examples.
The report alleges that in a minority of cases, institutions in the UK that receive Saudi funding are run directly from Saudi Arabia, however in most instances the money appears to “simply buy foreign donors’ influence.”
Through a statement the Saudi embassy in London has said that any accusations the kingdom had radicalized “a small number of individuals are baseless and lack credible evidence.”
If further pointed out that the country had itself been subject to a numerous attacks by al-Qaeda and so-called Islamic State.
It also added that “We do not and will not condone the actions or ideology of violent extremism and we will not rest until these deviants and their organizations are destroyed.”
Labor MP Dan Jarvis while endorsing the report said that it shed light on “very worrying” links between Saudi Arabia and the funding of extremism and he called for the government to release its report on foreign funding.”In the wake of the terrible and tragic terrorist attacks we have seen this year, it is vital that we use every tool at our disposal to protect our communities,This includes identifying the networks that promote and support extremism and shutting down the financial networks that fund it.”
Furthermore Prime Minister Theresa May, who had visited the Saudi Kingdom in April, has insisted that the UK’s historic relationship with the desert kingdom is important for British security and trade.
Adding to the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had called for the immediate suspension of UK arms exports to Saudi Arabia because of the negative human rights record and involvement in military action in Yemen.
