Brexit: Merkel says UK offer on EU citizens a good start

UK plans to ensure the rights of EU citizens in Britain after Brexit lauded by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Chancellor has however, said that there were “many, many other questions” about Brexit. She further added that there was “still a lot to do.”

On Thursday, 22nd June 2017, at a EU summit in Brussels, Prime Minister Theresa May had unveiled the UK proposal. The UK proposal would grant EU migrants who have been living in the UK for five years a new “UK settled status.” The status would allow them to stay in the country and access health, education and other benefits.

It will have effects on the 3.2 million EU citizens who are living in the UK.

Among the many thorny issues that have to be resolved early in Brexit talks, The rights of UK citizen living in the EU and the EU citizens living in the UK, the UK’s divorce bill and the Northern Ireland border.

At the end of Thursday’s talks Mrs Merkel said “Theresa May made clear today that EU citizens who have been in Great Britain for five years can keep their full rights. That’s a good start. But of course there are many, many other questions about Brexit – about finances, about the relationship with Ireland – which means we still have a lot to do until October.

However Chancellor Merkel insisted that the Brexit was not the focus of the summit, she said that the UK’s split from the EU is being negotiated separately.

She added “For me the shaping of the future of the 27 is a priority coming before the issue of the negotiations with Britain on the exit.

Before Mrs May had made the offer, the EU had proposed that the EU citizens in the UK and the estimated 1.2 million Britons living in EU countries should continue enjoying the same rights, which had been enforceable by the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

PM May’s Assurance was sought by the 27 other EU states, saying the UK “does not want anyone here to have to leave, nor does it want families to be split up, No-one will face a cliff edge” she added.

A year ago the UK had stunned the EU when it had voted to end its membership in a referendum. Deadline of the exit is 30th March 2019.

Migration, security and economic issues are going to be the focus of attention of the final day of the summit.

In the wake of attack in Brussels on Tuesday, 20th June 2017, counter terrorism has been a key issue at the summit. Several EU states have been attacked in recent weeks, these include UK, France and Sweden. Mrs May had said that an attack against any member state was an attack on all.

The EU along with the UK would like to wrap up the issue of citizens rights.  With more issues to tackle it would be good for the morale to get an early win.
