Friend of South Korea’s former president Choi Soon-sil jailed
South Korea’s former President’s close friend has been jailed for three years for corruption.
Choi Soon-sil has been convicted for soliciting favours for her daughter; it is the first in a wide reaching influence peddling scandal which has been brought down on President Park Geun-hye.
Ms Soon-sil had acted for years as an adviser to Ms Park, Ms Park has been impeached and is facing a trial. Choi is also facing charges that she had accepted bribes for Ms Park. While Ms Park had denied all allegations of corruption on her.
Choi had been found guilty of using her position in order to influence officials at a university to admit her daughter, Chung Yoo-ra, She has also been accused to give her daughter grades for papers or exams she never took.
The court in its verdict stated that “she committed too much wrongdoing to consider the actions were out of love as a mother who wants the best for her child.”
Ewha Womans University’s Two former officials have also been jailed for colluding with Choi. Along with these charges Choi still faces other charges including abuse of authority, coercion, attempted coercion and attempted fraud.
According to the Prosecutors say Ms Chung, had been involved in economic crimes, exam fraud, obstructing business and concealing criminal proceeds.
On the other hand she has denied all these accusations and said that she had no knowledge of her mother’s dealings, including those with Ms Park.
21 years old Ms Chung had been arrested in Denmark earlier this year and extradited to South Korea.
So far Ms Chung has not been detained. On Tuesday, 20th June 2017, a local court had said that there was no need to detain her, the court had refused the prosecution’s request for an arrest warrant.
Choi is facing trial and is accused of using her presidential connections to pressure companies to give millions of dollars in donations to two non profit foundations which she controlled.
It is alleged that in exchange, of the donations the companies got preferential treatment from the government.
