Ceasefire deal agreed by US, Russia and Jordan in Syrian crisis

A ceasefire deal has been agreed by the US, Russia and Jordan, the deal will be put in place across south western Syria, the ceasefire is due to begin on Sunday.

According to Jordan it will take place along a line agreed by both Syrian government forces and rebels.

The ceasefire had been announced after the US and Russian leaders had met in person for the first time.

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin during their meeting had discussed a wide range of topics which included the war in Syria.

This face to face meeting was held at the sidelines of G20 summit at Hamburg.

According to the UN’s refugee agency, more than 300,000 people have had lost their lives in the Syrian war, the war had began with anti-government protests in 2011, while another 5.5 million people have left the country and another 6.3 million are internally displaced.

The US and Russia have been backing opposing sides, Moscow has been supporting the Syrian regime with its armed forces while the Washington has called for the removal of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This agreement, which Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said would cover the regions of Daraa, Quneitra and Sweida, is reported to be the result of several months of undisclosed meetings between Russia and the US on Syria.

According to Mr Lavrov Russia and the USA will be coordinating with Jordan to act “as guarantors of the observance of this [ceasefire] by all groups.”

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson while speaking after the meeting in Hamburg, said: “I think this is our first indication of the US and Russia being able to work together in Syria, and as a result of that we had a very lengthy discussion regarding other areas in Syria that we can continue to work together on to de-escalate the areas.”

According to Mr Tillerson the meeting also showed that the two countries eventual aims for Syria “are exactly the same” however they differed on how they should be achieved.
