Colombia conflict: Dutch journalists seized by ELN rebels still held

National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels have yet not released the two Dutch journalists which were kidnapped in Colombia last weekend.

Earlier the ELN rebels had said that Derk Bolt and Eugenio Follender had been “freed in perfect condition.

According to the Dutch embassy in Colombia, it had no information about the reported release.

The kidnapping move by the left winged ELN could end up disrupting the peace talks with the government.

Early on Friday, 23th June 2017, the ELN had said that the journalists had been freed. However later on it added that it “couldn’t properly corroborate” this.

The journalists Mr Bolt and Mr Follender had been near the El Tarra in the Catatumbo region, which resides near the border with Venezuela. They had been searching for the mother of a Colombian child which was adopted in the Netherlands.

In 2016, the ELN had kidnapped a Spanish journalist and several Colombians in the same area. However all of them were later released.

The ELN is considered the second largest left-wing guerrilla group in Colombia, behind the Farc.

Farc had signed a peace deal with the government last November,2016. Farc are coming to the end of a disarmament process and are preparing to enter civilian life. The ELN only started peace talks in February this year.
