The football trader window refers to the “window” in time during which leagues can legally recruit players. Players can only be transferred from one league to the other during this time period and according to the rules set by the governing body.
A Brief Explanation:
Whenever a league or a club has its eyes set on a certain player, attempts are made to lull him/her to join. However, there are certain rules that have been formulated and enforced in order to ensure that this process of transferring players remains as smooth and transparent as possible.
In a proposed transfer, there will typically be a few negotiations going on. These would include:
- Between the buying and the selling club regarding the transfer fee,
- The negotiations about personal terms of the player; these would generally be between the buying club and the agent or representative of the player,
- Perhaps the most crucial would be the discussion between the agent/representative of the player and the buying club regarding a “transfer fee”. This is basically a compensation for the players’ rights.
Before formal procedure begins, efforts are made to gauge the interest of the player. This is not entirely an ethical procedure as before approaching the player, permission must be obtained from the club or league with which the player is currently affiliated.
Transfer deals are often announced before the transfer window formally begins. This is possible (and legal!) because while the transfer window is the time during which clients can be transferred, there is no law against discussions and verbal commitments being made beforehand.
