First face to face talks between Trump and Pope Francis: The President had arrived for the meeting with his wife Melania, daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. This meeting was keenly awaited as President and the Pope had already clashed at a distance on issues including migration and climate change.
President Trump will also meet Italy’s Prime minister.
Later on the President will fly to Brussels for a Nato summit. Earlier the President had vowed to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace, as he had ended the Middle East leg of his tour.
Earlier the US leader had begun his foreign trip with a two-day stop at Saudi Arabia over the weekend. There, he had urged the Muslim leaders to fight terrorism and to drive out the terrorist.
President Trump and his delegation arrived at the Vatican just before 08:30 local time. The meeting was arranged at the nick of time which resulted in the early start time.
Archbishop Georg Ganswein who is the head of the papal household had greeted the US president and escorted from the Vatican courtyard to the offices of Pope Francis.
According to the Journalists who covered the initial greeting, the pair were cordial with each other. President Trump at this moment told the Pope “it is a great honour.”
President and the Pope met privately for twenty minutes after which they exchanged gifts. President Trump gave the Pope a boxed set of writings by the black civil rights leader Martin Luther King. The Pope on the other hand gave Trump a signed copy of a message that he had delivered on World Peace Day, along with some of Pope’s writing on the need to protect the environment.
