G7 leader to turn attention to Africa as Trump’s foreign tour enters final leg

G7 leader to turn attention to Africa as Trump’s foreign tour enters final leg: Leaders of Tunisia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Niger and Nigeria will be joining the second day of the G7 summit held in Taormina, Sicily.

Italy had chose to host the meeting there in order to draw attention to Africa and the other millions of migrants who had risk the crossing to Europe.

However the G& summit discussion has been dominated by terrorism and climate change.

Saturday is also the last day of US President Donald Trump’s foreign tour.

During President Trump’s first G7 summit, On Friday the President told his fellow G7 leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan that he had not yet decided whether or not to endorse the Paris agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. US withdrawal could jeopardize the whole deal.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres who is also present at the meeting has said that the accord would survive regardless of President Trump’s position.

Mr Guterres, who had been the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, travelled to Sicily to call for greater action to deal with migration Thus far during this year, more than 1,500 migrants are thought to have drowned in the Mediterranean.

Italy is making efforts to get the world’s wealthiest nations to support African countries in developing their economies, in order to achieve a state where fewer young people will feel forced to make the dangerous journey to Europe.

However, according to a diplomat other Italian proposals which had looked to highlight the benefits of migration and promote a major initiative on food security were dismissed ahead of the summit.

The sources have said that the President Trump administration was not willing to highlight the benefits of human mobility.

The President’s trip will reach a close on Saturday 27th, May, 2017. The President will reach home amongst low approval rating and a investigation into alleged Russian links in the American elections.
