Libya : Rival armed groups clash in capital: According to the officials at least 28 people were killed and about 130 injured in the attacks. During the attack explosions were heard across the city and witnesses have said that residential areas in the south had been shelled.

The UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) since its arrival in March 2016 has so far struggled to establish itself in Tripoli. The UN backed government wields little control beyond parts of the capital and has relied on a complex network of armed groups with shifting allegiances.

On Friday 26th, May, 2017, the fighting began at dawn around a complex of luxury villas in the south of the city. According to the militants against the GNA the attack was on the loyalist forces.

According to the health ministry it is not confirmed whether civilians had been among the dead, however reports suggest that most of the casualties were of fighters.

Of late, the attacked area had been the headquarters of militias who were supporting the former Prime Minister Khalifa Ghweil. Mr Ghweil had been ousted when the GNA was set up and had refused to recognise the new administration.

Earlier in March forces which were loyal to the GNA had seized the complex however dozens of armed groups still operate there.

According to the internationally recognised authorities “there was no room left for anarchy and chaos“, the authorities have also condemned the fighting.

According to reports on Friday 26th, May, 2017 in Southern Tripoli, an armed group loyal to the GNA reportedly seized al-Hadhba prison where former officials of ousted dictator Col Muammar Gaddafi are held. According to the Judicial sources prison guards were forced to withdraw and two were killed.

The prison is run by an Islamist group which is yet to declare whether it supports GNA or not, so far the fate of the inmates is not clear. Ever since Gaddafi was ousted in October 2011, Libya has been in Chaos, with two rival Parliaments and three governments operating simultaneously.

Libya has been in chaos since the overthrow of Gaddafi in October 2011. There are two rival parliaments and three governments with that three years of turmoil has helped Islamic State (IS) has been able to find footing in Libya.
