Iran elections: Hassan Rouhani all set for a second term: Preliminary results show that President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani is on course to win the elections for the second term in office.
Iranian state TV has reported that out of the 26 million votes counted so far, Mr Rouhani has won 14.6 million which accounts for more than half of the total votes.
On the other hand Mr Rouhani’s main challenger Ebrahim Raisi has lodged complaints about the alleged voting irregularities in the polls. Ebrahim Raisi has accused that supporters of Mr Rouhani have used hundreds of acts of propaganda at voting booths. Propagating at polling booths is banned under Iranian electoral law.
56 year old Mr Raisi is a conservative cleric and has a background in the judicial system. Due to the high amount of turnout which was around 70%, the Voting time for the polls had been extended by five hours, until midnight. The interior ministry has said that more than 40 million votes had been cast. Officials of the election commission have said that extension of polling hours was given due to the “requests” and the “enthusiastic participation of people.”
During his election campaign, 68 year old Mr Rouhani had promised a moderate vision and an outward looking Iran. He had tied his success to the brokered nuclear deal between Iran, US and other countries in 2015. President Donald Trump is opposed to the deal, but the White house had renewed it earlier this week. The deal had eased sanctions on Iran.
Election official Ali Asghar Ahmadi has said that the final results are expected to be announced at 14:00 local time (09:30GMT).
