Iran elections: Pro Rouhani reformists in Tehran beat the conservatives: Reformist group Omid (Hope) which is pro-Rouhani has won all 21 seats and ousted their conservative rivals who have held power for 14 years. Earlier Iran’s President Mr Rouhani had won the elections in the first round. President Rouhani had won the elections in the first round and had promised a moderate and outward looking Iran, he had also criticised the conservative dominated judiciary.
The Council elections were held alongside the presidential vote the results of which were announced on Sunday. The new city council must convene within 45 days when it will elect new mayor who will oversee the services for Tehran’s nine million residents.
The current Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf was also a candidate for the presidential election in the early stages but had dropped out to back hardliner Ebrahim Raisi. Mr Raisi had only received 38.5% of the total vote, the votes were not enough to take the election to a second round.
President Rouhani had said that his resounding victory showed that the people had rejected extremism and wanted more links with the outside world.
Analysts believe that President Rouhani is in a strong position to seek reforms and to revive Iran’s ailing economy.
After the announcement of the victory supporters of President Rouhani could be seen celebrating on the streets.
