Leo Varadkar: Ireland set to have first gay PM: After winning the leadership of the Fine Gael party Leo Varadkar is set to become the Republic of Ireland’s next taoiseach (prime minister).
38-year-old Leo Varadkar along with being the youngest ever leader of the country will become the first gay taoiseach.
By winning 60% of the votes to lead Fine Gael which is the biggest party in the coalition government, Mr Varadkar beat his rival, Housing Minister Simon Coveney. Mr Varakdar will be succeeding Enda Kenny as leader of the centre-right party within weeks.
Mr Varakdar a former GP is the son of an Irish nurse and a doctor from India, much of the coverage of his victory has focused on Mr Varadkar’s background age and sexuality.
DUP leader Arlene Foster the former first minister of Northern Ireland had spoken to congratulate Mr Varadkar. Prime Minister Theresa May had also sent a letter to Mr Varadkar.
After the announcement was made on Friday, 2nd, May, 2017, the new Fine Gael leader said he was “honoured” to accept the “enormous challenge” ahead of him with humility.
He added that “If my election shows anything it’s that prejudice has no hold in this Republic,When my father travelled 5,000 miles to build a new home in Ireland, I doubt he ever dreamed his son would grow up to be its leader.”
