US can fulfill climate pledges says New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg: Former New York Mayor Micheal Bloomberg has said that the US can still meet its commitments to fight climate change, despite President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris accord.
Mr Bloomberg argued that this could be done “through partnerships among cities, states and businesses” Mr Bloomberg said that Americans should not let Washington get into their way.
Mr Bloomberg is currently the UN’s special envoy for cities and climate change.
Mr Trump had claimed that the 2015 Paris accord will cost US jobs and said that the US will not be a part of any accord that treats the US “unfairly.”
The decision which was made on Thursday, 01st, May, 2017, had been condemned by the International community.
US along with China, the EU and India, are the four biggest emitters of carbon dioxide, except for the US all other countries had restated their commitment to the accord.
The accord had committed the US and 194 other countries to keeping rising global temperatures “well below” 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial levels and “endeavour to limit” them even more, to 1.5C.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation, in the worst scenario, this Pullout by the US could add 0.3C to global temperatures by the end of the century.
Mr Bloomberg said following talks with the French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris said, “Americans don’t need Washington to meet our Paris commitments, and Americans are not going to let Washington stand in the way of fulfilling it, I want the world to know that the US will meet its Paris commitments and that through partnerships among cities, states and businesses we will seek to remain part of the Paris agreement process.We are already halfway there and we can accelerate our process further even without any support from Washington,”
Meanwhile, President Macron restated his position that the Paris accord was “irreversible” and would be implemented.
