Military top brass sacked by Venezuelan president sacks military amid abuses

Four top military commanders have been replaced by Venezuela’s president, the replacement comes over the use of live bullets by security forces during months of unrest.

Images of security forces apparently firing on protesters emerged on Monday, 19th June 2017.

Furthermore recruitment of 40,000 new police officers and national guardsmen was also announced by President Nicolas Maduro.

Conversely at a meeting of American States Venezuela has been accused of human rights abuses.

The military reshuffle includes the removal of Gen Antonio Benavides Torres, the head of the National Guard, who protesters accuse of being behind many of the attacks against them.

President Maduro also added that he was replacing the heads of the army, navy and the central strategic command.

There was public outrage On Monday, 19th June 2017, after photos which showed members of the National Guard directly firing at protestors emerged. Furthermore another demonstrator had been shot dead.

Conversely the military has maintained a stance that the growing death toll was due to rogue soldiers.

However, Luisa Ortega Venezuela’s attorney general in May said that she had witness statements that a protester had been hit by a tear gas canister fired at close range. Ms Ortega added that the security forces had broken international rights law.

Furthermore Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez had also warned the security forces this month not to commit “atrocities” after police had been filmed attacking and robbing demonstrators.

12 countries had called on President Maduro to respect human rights and announce an election timetable; the demand had came during a meeting of the 34-nation Organization of American States (OAS) in Mexico.

Conversely the Foreign minister of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez in response said that the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, is trying to plunge her country into civil war.

The critics of Venezuela had been described by her as “lapdogs of imperialism.

Despite having huge oil reserves, Venezuela has been facing a shortage of basic items, which include food and medicines as well rampant crime.

The opposition says the socialist governments of Mr Maduro and his predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez, have wrecked the economy and increasingly suppressed dissent.

The opposition has been calling for early elections and the release of jailed opposition politicians.
