Soldiers shoot down a suspected suicide bomber at Brussels railway station
A man suspected of being a would be suicide bomber has been shot dead by Belgian soldiers at Brussels Central Station, officials say.
The would-be suicide bomber was shot after he set off a small explosion; no one else is believed to have been injured in the attack.
The Prosecutors have stated that the man has died and the attack is being treated as a terrorist attack.
Earlier in the March of 2016, 32 people had been killed in attacks on Brussels which were claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group.
A Belgium newspaper which had quoted the prosecutors has said that the man was wearing a rucksack and a explosives belt.
An eyewitness of the incident Nicolas Van Herrewegen, a railway sorting agent, said that he had gone down to the station’s mezzanine level when he heard someone shouting.
“Then he cried ‘Allahu Akbar’ and he blew up a wheeled suitcase, I was behind a wall when it exploded. I went down and alerted my colleagues to evacuate everyone. He [the suspect] was still around but after that we didn’t see him. It wasn’t exactly a big explosion but the impact was pretty big, People were running away.”
The suspect has been described by Mr Van Herrewegen as well-built and tanned with short hair, wearing a white shirt and jeans.
He added that “I saw that he had something on him because I could see wires emerging, so it may have been a suicide vest”
According to reports, after the station along with the Grand Place had been evacuated, businesses along with the restaurants were ordered to be closed and to draw their shutters down.
Along with that metro lines which were running through the station were also briefly suspended on orders of the police.
Earlier on 22nd March 2016, three suicide bombers had mounted twin attacks on the city’s Zaventem airport and Maelbeek underground station.
The same Brussels-based IS cell had also been behind the gun and bomb attacks which were mounted on Paris in November 2015. The attack had resulted in the death of 130 people.
