More than 40 people die of thirst in Sahara Desert: According the Red Cross, survivors say that 44 people have died of thirst after a truck broke down in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger.
Red Cross official Lawal Taher has said that the six survivors who walked to a remote village are being looked after in Dirkou, Niger.
According to sources several children were amongst the dead.
Reports by the Nigerian media suggest that the Ghanaians and Nigerians have been trying to get to Libya.
Mr Taher has said that no one has gone to identify the bodies. The route is one of the main ways through which people cross to the mediterranean Sea to get to Europe.
One of the most perilous parts of the journey is crossing the Sahara as migrants are crammed into pickup trucks often with only enough room for a few litres of water.
