Names of Sailors killed in USS Fitzgerald’s collision off Japan’s coast revealed
Names of the sailors of the US navy who were killed when their destroyer collided with a container ship in Japanese waters on Saturday revealed.
A statement by the US navy has said that the sailors had been found in flooded berths onboard the USS Fitzgerald.
The accident had resulted in the death of three more. The US navy in its statement has said that many of the crew of Fitzgerald were asleep when the accident happened. After the accident the warship has been towed to the US naval base in Yokosuka.
After the incident seven sailors were reported missing, while the incident had taken place at about 02:30 local time on Saturday, 17th June 2017.
According to a statement by the Navy, the divers have gained access to the damaged areas and found their remains.
Joseph P Aucoin, the commander of the 7th Fleet had told the reporters that the collision caused a “big gash” under the warship’s waterline.
The commander added that the vessel could have sunk were it not for “heroic efforts” by the crew members, which had prevented the flooding from “catastrophically spreading” to other parts of the warship.
According to the Marine traffic records it has been suggested that the container ship, the Filipino-flagged which is named ACX Crystal, had made a sudden U-turn roughly 25 minutes before the crash. It is not known why it changed course.
The records from USS Fitzgerald are not publicly available.
According to maritime rules, vessels are supposed to give way to ships on their starboard side which is where the damage to the destroyer is – sparking questions over whether the US ship could have been at fault.
The Navy said the remains of the following sailors had been found:

Ngoc T Truong Huynh, 25
Noe Hernandez, 26
Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan, 23
Xavier Alec Martin, 24
Gary Leo Rehm Jr, 37
