New corruption accusations for the Brazilian president

New corruption accusations for the Brazilian president: The President of Brazil Michel Temer has been accused of taking bribes of millions of dollars since 2010. The information came out through a testimony given in the Supreme Court.

The plea bargain testimony has come out from the bosses of a giant meat packing firm. If the accusations are confirmed these accusations could prove devastating for Mr Temer’s crisis-hit administration. The president on the other hand has vowed to prove his innocence.

The president is already facing allegations of authorising paying bribes to silence a witness in a huge corruption scandal.  Thursday the president had vowed during a TV address to stay on as president.

Chairman of the JBS Company Mr Joesley Batista has alleged that Mr Temer had paid more than 2.5m during the course of last seven years for electoral campaigning and to pay allies.

President Temer has also been accused by another company director who claims that $4.6m was distributed to Mr Temer’s allies in 2014 in the guise of official election campaign donations.

According to the testimony former Presidents Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff have also been accused of receiving $50m and $30m respectively in order to fund political campaigns. Both the former presidents have denied any accusations against them.

Prosecutor General Rodrigo Janot wrote in a court filing on Friday that President Temer was one of the politicians who obstructed investigations into the massive corruption inquiry known as “Operation Car Wash.”

A year earlier, President Temer had taken the office after President Dilma Rousseff was impeached. Now calls for President Temer’s removal have also started.

On Thursday Brazilian authorities had released an audio recording. The recording showed President Temer e discussing bribes in conversation with Mr Batista.

President Temer has said that the footage is authentic and is taken from a meeting in March, but President Temer has strongly denied wrongdoing.

President Temer is already considered deeply unpopular in Brazil. His centre-right party has been able to govern as part of a coalition. Opposition parties have raised demands for snap elections and President Temer’s impeachment.

This is the first time President Temer’s name has came in “operation car wash.”
